One year, one world! Our reflection on circling the globe, starting with Kilimanjaro and safari in Africa, navigating the ancient chaos of India, trekking in Nepal, cruising the Adriatic, exploring the deserts of Morocco, and sailing the icebergs of Antarctica.
After one unforgettable year circling the globe, we finally came home — a little dustier, a little wiser, and forever changed by the wildly beautiful world we had the chance to wander through.
Africa – The Wild Beginning
We began in East Africa, where the heat, colours, and rhythm of life immediately broke our Canadian sense of order. Zanzibar was our first stop, and what an introduction — spice markets, turquoise water, and a pace so unhurried it almost required relearning how to breathe.
From there, we made our way to the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, where ambition met altitude. Standing on Africa’s highest peak felt like starting the trip at the top of the world — literally and metaphorically.
After conquering the mountain, we bounced across the savannas of Tanzania and Kenya on safari, watching lions stalk the grasslands and elephants wander like ancient guardians. The sheer scale of it all — the sky, the silence, the circle of life unfolding right before our eyes — made us feel small in the best possible way.
The Middle East – Sand, Spice, and Surprises
Dubai was our first encounter with ultra-modern opulence. One minute we were gazing up at the world’s tallest building, the next we were bartering in a gold souk, wondering how both could exist in the same city. From there, Morocco gave us an entirely different world — a maze of medinas, the call to prayer echoing at sunset, and the smell of tagine drifting through rooftop cafés.
Between camel rides in the Sahara and mint tea under desert stars, Morocco felt like a fever dream of colour and contrast. It was enchanting, chaotic, magnetic — and impossible to forget.
Europe – History, Heart, and a Few Wrong Turns
England was a welcome dose of familiar language and proper tea, though the London drizzle reminded us quickly why we left home in July. We wandered through history in every direction — cathedrals, castles, and pubs that seemed older than our entire country.
Spain followed, and with it came sunshine, tapas, wine, and streets that came alive after dark. From Barcelona’s Gaudà dreamscapes to Granada’s Alhambra, Spain invited us to slow down and savour life — preferably with churros.
We drifted next into the precision of Geneva and the glorious chaos of Rome. In Switzerland, we walked along a lake so calm it looked painted into existence, while Rome reminded us that history doesn’t just live in museums — it towers overhead and crumbles beneath your feet.
The Adriatic – Cruising the Blue
Our Adriatic cruise was a floating pause button — a chance to reset in between continents. We sailed through Croatia’s cliffs and cobblestones, wandered Montenegro’s medieval walls, and watched the sun melt into the sea each evening from the ship’s deck.
It wasn’t just sightseeing — it was breathing room. A reminder that travel doesn’t always need a mission. Sometimes it just needs motion.
Asia – Mountains, Chaos, and Calm
Nepal arrived like a whisper. Prayer flags fluttered in thin mountain air, and time seemed to slow in the shadow of the Himalayas. Trekking there didn’t just stretch our legs — it expanded our spirit.
Then came India — a full sensory takeover. It was wild and raw and unfiltered. Street chai in Delhi, sunrise at the Taj Mahal, tuk-tuk rides, holy rivers, cows in traffic, and more humanity than we had ever experienced in one place. It was life turned up to 11 — messy, beautiful, unforgettable.
Egypt took us from chaos to ancient wonder. The Pyramids of Giza felt unreal, as if someone forgot to mention they were actually built by giants. Sailing the Nile reminded us how old and wise the world is — and how lucky we were to be exploring it.
South America – Ice, Wind, and Tango
Argentina greeted us with steak, Malbec, and tango — a warm invitation before the icy adventure to come. Patagonia showed us nature with its teeth bared: sharp peaks, roaring winds, and vistas so wild they felt untouched.
Then came Antarctica — a destination so surreal it felt like stepping off the map. We sailed past towering icebergs, watched penguins waddle like grumpy old men, and stood in a silence deeper than anything we’d ever known. It wasn’t just a place — it was a feeling we carried with us long after.
We thawed out in Las Vegas because why not? Neon lights, loud music, giant drinks — if Antarctica fed the soul, Vegas fed the absurdity we didn’t know we needed.
Oceania – Nature’s Encore
New Zealand was the adventure movie we didn’t know we were starring in. Epic roads, endless sheep, glowworm caves, and mountain landscapes that seemed too perfect to be real. We hiked, we road-tripped, we found peace in the wind.
Fiji was our landing strip of soft sand and warm water. After so many months in motion, Fiji taught us one final lesson: sometimes joy is as simple as floating in the sea and doing absolutely nothing.
Homecoming – Full Circle
We returned to Canada a year older but somehow lighter — as if the world had shaken loose a few unnecessary pieces of who we thought we were. We had circled the globe, but what we really discovered was the astonishing hospitality of strangers, the resilience of curiosity, and the strange truth that the farther you go, the closer you come to yourself.
This trip wasn’t about counting countries. It was about moments — the quiet ones, the chaotic ones, the ones that scared us, healed us, and changed us. One year, one world, and a lifetime of stories still unfolding.
